The notions of optimal piecewise smooth interpolation and oscillation of interpolationtype are introduced. This notions are used and illustrated on some cubic piecewisesmooth interpolation procedures and on some cubic splines. It is obtained a cubic spline ofinterpolation having minimal quadratic oscillation in average, as an application of the leastsquares method.
